Enterprise SAS HDDs

Enterprise SAS Storage

Certified enterprise SAS hard drives deliver higher sustained throughput, better endurance ratings, and longer MTBF than consumer-grade drives. Built for 24/7 continuous operation in production storage environments.

Dedicated OS Drives

Dedicated OS Drives

A separate system NVMe SSD isolates the operating system and metadata from your data drives. OS activity never competes with storage I/O, and a failed data drive cannot affect system stability.

High-Throughput Networking

High-Throughput Networking

Vault 3 includes 10 Gbps unmetered public bandwidth and 50 Gbps private connectivity — essential for fast data ingestion from multiple sources and high-speed backups between storage nodes.

Hot-Swap Drive Bays

Hot-Swap Drive Bays

All drive bays support hot-swap replacement and addition. Expand capacity or replace a failed drive without powering down the server, with no interruption to services running on it.

Storage That Scales With Your Data

Three features that separate enterprise storage infrastructure from consumer NAS.

Enterprise SAS Reliability

Enterprise SAS drives are rated for continuous operation at workloads consumer drives cannot sustain. Higher MTBF ratings, better vibration tolerance in multi-drive environments, and consistent sustained transfer rates make them the standard for production storage infrastructure.

Expand Without Downtime

Hot-swap drive bays let you add capacity or replace failed drives while the server stays online. Your services keep running during expansion — no scheduled maintenance windows, no data migration required.

Private Network for Data Flows

Move backups between storage nodes, replicate to a secondary server, or connect to a compute cluster — all over the 25–50 Gbps private network without consuming public bandwidth or incurring transfer charges.

Dedicated Storage Servers – Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our high-capacity bare-metal storage server plans.

Enterprise SAS drives are designed for continuous operation at high queue depths across all 24 hours of the day. They carry higher MTBF ratings (typically 1.2–2.5 million hours versus 0.3 million for consumer drives), better vibration compensation for multi-drive enclosures, and consistent sustained transfer rates. Consumer SATA and NVMe drives are optimised for burst performance, not sustained throughput — they degrade faster under continuous load and are not rated for the duty cycles storage servers demand.

Yes. All Tonic Vault servers have hot-swap drive bays, meaning you can insert additional drives or replace existing ones while the server is running. Storage capacity can be expanded up to 24 drives on top-tier configurations. Contact sales@tonicvps.com to confirm available expansion options for your specific plan.

The most common workloads are: large-scale backup targets (replacing tape or cloud backup at lower per-TB cost), media asset storage for video production pipelines, self-hosted object storage with MinIO or Ceph, archiving large datasets, and private file servers for distributed teams. Vault 3 with its 16×24 TB SAS array and 10 Gbps network is particularly suited to high-throughput ingest scenarios.

The operating system, swap space, logs, and all system activity run on a dedicated NVMe SSD that has no connection to your data drive array. If a data drive fails or an array rebuild runs at full speed, your OS performance is completely unaffected. Conversely, heavy system load never starves your storage I/O. This architectural separation is a standard practice in production storage systems.

Yes. You have full root access and can configure any software RAID level using Linux mdadm, ZFS, Btrfs, or any RAID solution you prefer. Hardware RAID controllers are available on some configurations. You choose the redundancy level — RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, or Z-series with ZFS — and manage the array yourself.
